Description

For full job description and details on how to apply:     The successful candidate will fulfil the role of Scientific Officer II (level 4) in delivering Ireland’s National Radon Control Strategy. Other posts related to radiological protection may be filled from the panel created by this competition.  The National Radon Control Strategy (NRCS) was launched by Government in 2014, in response to the scale of the radon problem in Ireland, with the objective to minimise the exposure to radon gas for people in Ireland. A NRCS is now a legal requirement of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2019 (S.I. 30 of 2019) which implements EU Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM. Under these regulations the NRCS must include the following requirements.  • promoting the identification of homes with radon concentrations above the national reference level; • developing advice and guidance for radon measurements and radon remedial methods in Ireland; • developing guidance that aligns NRCS objectives on reducing radon with other national programmes, such as those on energy saving or indoor air quality; • developing information on ways to prevent radon ingress in new buildings, including identification of building materials with significant radon exhalation; • provision of local and national information on indoor radon exposure and the associated health risks, on the importance of performing radon measurements and on the technical means available for reducing existing radon concentrations.   The Strategy sets out 33 actions to be implemented across Government Departments and other public bodies.  The successful candidate will work within the team responsible for managing and co-ordinating the EPA actions under the Strategy.  Working with other parties is key to ensuring a coordinated approach.  In addition, knowledge gaps have been identified that need to be addressed to support effective delivery of the Strategy.  The successful candidate will both manage and be involved in research and other measures needed to address such gaps and ensure NRCS actions are evidence based.   The full range of duties and the essential requirements for this position are set out in the Candidate Information Booklet.
